Published on 20 January 2021 at 09:11

The 20th of January 2021 marks the day that Joseph R.Biden will be inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States of America. The inaugerationsignifies the achievement of a dream for Biden that has spanned almost five decades. It also comes at a time when America has never been so divided. Security around the capitol has increased since the insurrection on January 6th.Outgoing president Donald Trump will not attend the event. The Biden Inaugural Committee has announced that the theme for the inauguration is  “America United”. So what can you expect from inauguration day?

Undoubtedly the inauguration will look very different due to the pandemic and security fears. Washington security has been increased and the number attending the event has been restricted. The Presidential  Inaugural Committee has created a display of 191,500 flags to symbolise all those who cannot travel to washington for the event and 56 pillars of light to represent all the states and territories. This comes along with Biden's determination to  prevent the inauguration becoming a superspreader event. The ceremony will be attended by celebrity guests including Lady Gaga singing the national anthem and Jennifer Lopez also scheduled to perform.

The swearing ceremony itself will take place at noon (5pm Irish Time) on the west side of the capitol.the vice president will take the oath first followed by Biden. The simple oath will legally inaugurated Joseph R Biden as the 46th president of the United States; I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States.”

The traditional congressional lunch has been scrapped and instead the new President, First Lady, Vice President and Second Gentleman  will immediately move to the east side of the capitol. Where the  traditional “Pass in Review” inspection of the troops will take place. Biden will  then give his first speech as president of the United States.

What is Joe Biden expected to say?

Biden's campaign message was “heal the soul of the nation” it is anticipated that the  inaugural speech will expand on this message. In recent weeks and days we have seen Biden take steps to address the divisions within the United States. It is likely that Biden will continue this sentiment and emphasise the need for the country to come together to heal these divisions.Biden will also reference the lives that have been lost to Covid-19 and outline the steps that will be taken to bring this to an end. Without doubt Biden’s Irish heritage will play a key part in the speech with a quote from an Irish poet guaranteed.

After the ceremony the Bidens and Harris- Emhoffs will be joined by former presidents and first ladies to lay a wreath at the grave of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington cemetery. The inaugural parade has been replaced with a virtual parade across the country similar to what was seen at democratic convention. The Bidens will then take the short walk by military escort to the White House. Biden will take his place as President of the United States marking the beginning of a new presidency for the United States. The inauguration proceedings will be televised and streamed online for everyone to become part of this historic event.

This particular inauguration has been long awaited by many and will kick start Joe Biden's term as the 46th president of the United States.
